Synopsis

The Uninvited must brave deadly trials, uncover ancient secrets, and confront a fallen power in a forsaken temple, where the only hope for the realm lies in reigniting the Broken Flame.

Ch. 1
Part 1: Arrival at the Temple
The sunless skies of the Feywild stretched over the ruined Temple of the Broken Flame, its jagged spires jutting like broken bones from the earth. The air was heavy with the scent of scorched stone, and faint embers danced across the blackened ground. Valryss, the gold dragon, descended with a low rumble, carrying the party to the temple’s crumbling steps. Standing at the entrance were two armored figures, their blackened plate glowing faintly with ember-like cracks. These were Ognjen and Zharre, the Emberbound Knights, guardians of the sacred grounds. Their presence radiated hostility and power, a silent warning that none should trespass without permission. The party noticed an absence—Kilijan was not with them. They recalled his departure before their ascent on Valryss’s back, his reasons unclear, and their journey had left no time to search for him. Greg stepped forward, determined to negotiate their entry into the temple. Dropping to one knee, he tried to demonstrate his sincerity, but the attempt was met with swift violence. Ognjen’s ember sword lashed out, striking Greg across the face with fiery precision. The force of the blow sent him crumpling to the ground, unconscious. Smoke curled from the cauterized wound as Greg lay unmoving, the life beginning to ebb from him. The other party members froze as Zharre’s presence loomed over them, his armored hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The unspoken threat was clear: intervention would not be tolerated. Greg’s breathing faltered, the faintest shudder of his body marking his first failed attempt to cling to life. The standoff grew tense as the party weighed their options. Greg’s condition worsened, his breaths shallow and irregular. Another flicker of life slipped away, and his second death save failed. As time pressed on, a shift occurred. The weight of the knights’ oath seemed to bear heavily upon Zharre, a conflict visible in his stance. The silent tension between the two guardians broke as Zharre acted. His blade turned against Ognjen, striking him down in a single decisive blow. As Ognjen fell, Zharre sank to his knees. His armored hand pressed to his chest, and in a final act of defiance against his oath, he drove his sword through his own heart. His body collapsed, lifeless, before the temple gates. Greg, in a miraculous surge of resilience, stirred from unconsciousness. The ordeal had left him marked with the power of the temple, granting him the boon of Acolyte of the Broken Flame: the ability to summon 2d10 temporary hit points and immunity to fire damage once per day while they lasted. From above, a faint pale blue flame shimmered within the ruins, observing the scene with quiet intensity. The party stepped cautiously past the bodies of the knights, moving toward the temple entrance as the flame’s light guided their path.

Part 2: The Hallway of Murals
The party stepped into the shadowed hallway of the temple, the air heavy with the mingled scents of ash and decay. The faint light of the pale blue flame above them revealed crumbling murals lining the walls, their once-vivid depictions marred by time and fire. Every step stirred loose soot, and the oppressive silence made each movement echo unnaturally in the cavernous space. The murals told a fragmented story, their images barely visible through the damage. Intricate carvings of flame and divine figures were juxtaposed with scenes of sacrifice and devotion. Mycha moved deliberately along the walls, brushing away layers of dust and soot to uncover the faint remnants of the temple’s history. The images portrayed the creation myth of the Order of the Broken Flame, a tale of a mortal chosen by the god Kossuth. This mortal’s immense sacrifice allowed him to carry the divine fire into the Feywild, where the temple was built to protect and revere it. As they advanced, the murals darkened in tone. The flames diminished, replaced by fractured images of skeletal figures and a shrouded being wielding terrible power. Though the details were faint, it was clear that the flame had been extinguished by a force not of the mortal plane. Further down the corridor, Weneon’s keen senses led him to a small pile of debris. Buried beneath the rubble was a strongbox, its lock rusted and fragile. With effort, he pried it open, revealing its contents: a handful of gold coins, a shimmering potion, and an ornate coin depicting a spider. The Coin of Inslith, intricately crafted, bore the likeness of a spider queen whose gaze seemed to follow the viewer. The blue flame pulsed gently, almost as if it approved of their progress. At the end of the hallway, the space opened into a larger chamber. The pale light from the flame danced across the room's threshold, hinting at a sense of foreboding within. Greg, moving with the stealth of a shadow, slipped ahead to scout the next area.

Part 3: The Altar Room
The party entered the Altar Room, a vast chamber steeped in ash and shadow. The remnants of grandeur lingered in its design, with towering columns etched with flame motifs, their carvings worn and cracked by time. The walls bore the same pale blue glow as the flame that had guided them, but the light was cold and lifeless, casting long, flickering shadows across the floor. At the center of the room loomed a massive Blazebron Behemoth, a hulking construct of molten rock and fire, its glowing core pulsing with an ominous rhythm. Its horned head turned slowly, surveying the room with eyes like burning coals. Surrounding it were three Emberbound Knights, their fiery blades drawn and ready. They stood vigilant, their presence unwavering, like statues waiting to spring to life. The party fanned out, their movements cautious and deliberate. Greg slipped into the shadows, his steps nearly silent as he crept around the perimeter of the room. Weneon and Mycha found cover behind a crumbled pillar, their forms hidden by the shifting light. Manasa, however, chose a different approach. His form shimmered and blurred as he invoked Misty Step, vanishing in a wisp of smoke and reappearing further into the chamber. The spell’s verbal incantation echoed faintly, just enough to catch the attention of one of the knights. Its head snapped toward Manasa, the glow of its ember-filled eyes intensifying as it raised its blade. The room erupted into chaos as the creatures surged forward to attack. The Blazebron Behemoth roared, the sound like grinding stone, and the heat emanating from its core intensified. The knights moved in coordinated precision, their blades leaving trails of flame as they slashed at the party. The pale blue flame from the ceiling flickered erratically, as though it, too, reacted to the violence below. The battle was fierce. Greg, from the shadows, launched precise strikes against the knights, his attacks finding vulnerable spots in their armor. Weneon, wielding divine energy, supported his allies with spells that bolstered their defenses and struck at the fiery constructs. Manasa fought with calculated ferocity, dodging the knights’ attacks and retaliating with bursts of radiant energy. As the fight raged, the Blazebron Behemoth unleashed a devastating attack. Flames erupted from its core, filling the room with a wave of scorching heat. The party staggered under the onslaught, but they pressed on, their teamwork and determination allowing them to turn the tide. One by one, the knights fell, their ember-filled forms crumbling into ash. With a final, earth-shaking blow, the Blazebron Behemoth collapsed, its molten body cooling into jagged stone. The room fell silent, save for the faint crackle of lingering embers. As the dust settled, three pale blue spirits emerged, their translucent forms shimmering in the dim light. They hovered above the fallen knights, their expressions somber and distant. These were echoes of the temple’s past, remnants of those who had once served the Broken Flame. The spirits communicated not with words, but through the faint impressions of memories. Images of the temple’s glory days flickered in the minds of the party: a time when the flame burned bright and its followers were revered. The visions darkened, showing the arrival of Baba Yaga, the destruction she wrought, and the extinguishing of the sacred flame. Realizing the spirits held valuable knowledge, Greg hurried back toward the hallway, hoping to glean more from the flame hovering there. As he crossed the threshold, the ground trembled, and a second Blazebron Behemoth emerged from the shadows, its molten core blazing with fresh fury. Greg sprinted back to the altar room, the behemoth in relentless pursuit. The party braced themselves, readying for another battle. The sound of clashing steel and roaring flames filled the chamber once more as not one but two additional behemoths were drawn to the commotion. The fight was grueling, pushing the party to their limits. By the end, ash coated the floor, and the air was thick with heat and smoke. The party, bloodied but victorious, retreated to a corner of the room to catch their breath. Before them loomed a massive door, its surface blackened and cracked, leading deeper into the temple: the Hall of the Broken Flame.

Part 4: The Hall of the Broken Flame
The doors to the Hall of the Broken Flame creaked open, revealing a vast, echoing chamber. The air was thick with a strange, ashen stillness, and the walls shimmered faintly with the ghostly remnants of firelight long extinguished. The hall was lined with spectral forms, spirits wandering aimlessly, their translucent figures barely holding shape. They moved without purpose, flickering like dying embers in a cold wind. At the center of the hall was a fire pit, its iron base carved with intricate runes. An ornate sword rested within it, thrust deep into the ash where flames once burned. Now, only darkness and cold remained, the pit a hollow echo of its former purpose. The pale blue flame that had followed the party hovered nearby, casting long shadows across the chamber. Greg approached the pit cautiously, his eyes drawn to the runes engraved along its edges. The markings were jagged and unfamiliar to most, but he recognized them as the ancient script of the Goliaths, though he couldn’t decipher their meaning. The rest of the party spread out, investigating the chamber. Behind the fire pit loomed a thick wall of fog, its swirling surface impenetrable to sight. It pulsed faintly, as though alive, radiating a sense of immense power and foreboding. The spirits, too, seemed drawn to it, their aimless wandering occasionally taking them near the fog, only to recoil as if repelled by an unseen force. Mycha studied the inscriptions along the fire pit, piecing together fragments of its meaning. He discerned that the flame, once known as the Broken Flame, could only be rekindled with a sacred artifact: the Heart of the Broken Flame. This heart was carried by the Lord of Ashes and Cinder, a being bound deep within the temple’s prison. To restore the temple and its order, the party would have to retrieve it. The weight of the task hung heavily in the air. The fire pit's runes and the faint whispers of the spirits suggested that only those who understood the flame’s true purpose could reignite it. Yet the way forward lay beyond the fog wall, and its secrets remained locked to them. After tending to their wounds and preparing for the unknown, the party stepped into the swirling fog. The cold touch of the mist enveloped them, and the world shifted as if the temple itself rejected their presence. When the mist cleared, the party found themselves in a new realm: the Shadowfell, a plane of perpetual twilight and gloom. They stood on the crumbling remnants of a great plateau, its surface littered with fragments of shattered architecture. In the distance, the faint outline of a ruined castle loomed, its spires broken and jagged against the gray sky. The plateau bore the haunting remnants of a once-mighty bastion, known now as the Firelink Shrine, a place of memories and despair. In the center of the plateau was a smaller fire pit, its flames burning faintly, but unlike the cold blue light they had seen before, this one glowed with a warm orange hue—a fragile ember fighting against the surrounding darkness. 462652006 1060910095832122 7730370130623839296 n Around the fire pit stood three fog walls, each leading to an unknown challenge. Spirits roamed the area, their forms hazy and indistinct. Though they did not speak, the whispers of their presence filled the air with a chorus of sorrow and longing. One spirit, larger and more defined than the others, emerged near the fire pit. It took the form of a knight clad in ancient armor, its insignia a golden sun etched onto the chest plate. The knight lingered silently by the fire, its head bowed, as if in prayer. The party gathered near the flames, sensing they had reached a point of no return. The whispers of the spirits hinted that the only way forward was to face the challenges beyond the fog walls. The path to restoring the Broken Flame lay within, but so too did trials that would test their resolve, their strength, and their will to persevere. The party steeled themselves, ready to face the dangers that awaited beyond the fog.

Part 5: The Trials of the Shadowfell
462570080 543257311875368 5427207144998526425 n The party stood before the fire pit of the Firelink Shrine, its feeble flame flickering against the oppressive gloom of the Shadowfell. Three towering fog walls loomed in the distance, each glowing faintly with an ominous light. The spirits surrounding the shrine drifted close, their whispers growing louder, repeating fragments of the past: a flame extinguished, a legacy shattered, and a destiny yet to be fulfilled. The fire pit pulsed weakly as the party stepped forward, its warmth barely reaching them. A faint connection seemed to form between it and the fog walls, a silent indication that they would need to enter all three to progress. Without hesitation, they divided themselves, each taking on a separate trial. Manasa’s Trial: The Taurus Demon Manasa stepped through the leftmost fog wall and found himself on a crumbling castle wall, high above a shadowy abyss. The wind howled around him, carrying the scent of ash and blood. A deafening roar shattered the stillness as the Taurus Demon emerged, its massive, bull-like frame towering above the battlements. Wielding an enormous axe, the demon charged with terrifying speed, each step shaking the ancient stone beneath its hooves. 462559956 4061462210752922 3117850246919561077 n Manasa dodged the initial blow, the axe carving a deep gouge into the stone where he had stood. Drawing on his arcane power, he unleashed a series of radiant strikes, each one leaving burning trails across the demon's hide. The creature retaliated with relentless ferocity, forcing Manasa to retreat along the narrow wall. Summoning his strength, Manasa called out to Valryss, the golden dragon, who descended in a blaze of light. Together, they launched a coordinated assault, Valryss’s fiery breath scorching the demon as Manasa struck its vulnerable legs. With a final, devastating blow, the Taurus Demon toppled from the wall, its body vanishing into the abyss below. Mycha and Weneon’s Trial: Ornstein and Smough Mycha and Weneon passed through the central fog wall and entered a golden hall, its grandeur tainted by decay. At its far end stood two towering figures: Ornstein, a lithe warrior in ornate dragon-like armor wielding a spear crackling with lightning, and Smough, a hulking executioner with a massive hammer. The duo attacked in perfect harmony, Ornstein darting forward with lightning-fast strikes while Smough’s crushing blows shattered the floor beneath them. Mycha and Weneon fought valiantly, weaving spells and strikes to keep the enemies at bay. With precise teamwork, they managed to bring Ornstein to his knees. Mycha delivered the final blow, his weapon piercing through the knight’s armor. However, as Ornstein fell, Smough let out a guttural roar, stepping forward to absorb his fallen ally’s power. The executioner’s form grew larger, his strikes more devastating, as lightning now crackled around his hammer. Despite their efforts, the pair was overwhelmed. Mycha fell first, struck by a lightning-charged blow, and Weneon soon followed, crushed beneath Smough’s hammer. Their vision faded to black as they succumbed to the Shadowfell’s oppressive grip. Greg’s Trial: The Capra Demon Greg entered the rightmost fog wall and found himself in a narrow alley, its walls steep and claustrophobic. Shadows flickered as two snarling hellhounds charged toward him, their jaws dripping with flame. Behind them loomed the Capra Demon, a monstrous figure with twin curved blades and glowing red eyes. Greg quickly dispatched the hellhounds, his strikes precise and calculated, but the Capra Demon was relentless. Its blades struck in wide arcs, forcing Greg to retreat and rely on his agility. Using his surroundings to his advantage, he climbed to higher ground, launching ranged attacks to whittle down the demon’s strength. The battle stretched on, each clash of steel reverberating through the narrow space. Exhausted and wounded, Greg landed a decisive blow, staggering the demon. But as he moved in to finish it, the Capra Demon lashed out with a desperate strike, cutting him down. Greg collapsed, his vision darkening, the sound of his own heartbeat fading into silence. Moments later, Manasa burst into the alley, arriving just in time to confront the weakened Capra Demon. Drawing on his remaining strength, he struck the final blow, vanquishing the demon and avenging Greg.

Part 6: the Return to Firelink Shrine
The fog walls dissolved, and the party found themselves back at the Firelink Shrine, their wounds and fatigue miraculously gone. The weak flame of the fire pit pulsed brighter, as though revitalized by their efforts. Nearby, the spectral knight Solaire of Astorria stood, gazing toward the horizon where the sun never rose. His presence was steady and reassuring, his silent encouragement urging them to persevere. Though their trials had been harrowing, the party now understood the nature of this place: failure was not final. Death in the Shadowfell served as a reminder, not an end. Solaire approached the fire pit, placing an obsidian dagger into Weneon’s hands. The blade bore inscriptions in Goliath script, along with a faint engraving in Common that read: "To my friend Xolotacl, once we’ll fight at each other’s side again." The dagger pulsed with a strange energy, pulling itself from Weneon’s grasp and carving a glowing red glyph into the ground. The name Kilijan formed within the glyph, a summoning rune waiting to be activated. As the light of the glyph subsided, Solaire raised his hands toward the perpetual twilight above and spoke softly, his words carried by the faint warmth of the flame: “Praise the sun, your ally has been chosen.”
